A Smartphone is a mobile device which offers advanced capabilities similar to like that of a PC suite. There is no industry standard definition for a Smartphone. The pros and cons vary according to the type, make, model and brand of Smartphones. The windows mobile Smartphones were introduced in 2002. After its arrival, the software suites have been improved and modified markedly to suit the functionality of such phone. Smartphones have both pros and cons. Some of the pros are: 1. All of the Smartphones have PDA (Personal Digital Assistance) combined with functionality for the mobile phone. 2. Most of the Smartphones are equipped with quad or tri band GSM modules which are used for world wide use. 3. It offers the facility to play music and video files through windows media player making it a multimedia device that is portable. 4. Most Smartphones support software developers with special reverence to gaming and entertainment developers who are the third party developers. 5. They offer a wide range of accessories like Bluetooth and navigation software for GPS. 6. Many of them support Wi-Fi technology which has made them part and parcel of the World Wide Web. 7. Most Smartphones have QWERTY
keypad for typing which overcomes the problems of a numeric keypad. 8. Windows Mobile 5.0 is capable of a relatively new concept called push e-mail. 9. Most of them have QV-GA resolution color screen. 10. They are small and lightweight and fit snuggly in a pocket. 11. They support Photo or Image editing software like Picasa. Some of the cons are: 1. Sending text message is limited as they have limited text space capabilities, especially on those Smartphones which have the numeric keypads only for your usage. 2. With an exception to Motorola Q, most of the Smartphones are considerably larger than the handset one is normally used to. 3. When compared to a pocket PC, they have smaller screens which make reading harder. 4. The nation wide coverage, for high speed data especially is actually limited to localities with a large density of population. Hence it is wise to check with the carriers' coverage before taking up the wireless plan. 5. Most of them do not have built in applications which are similar to that of a pocket PC, for example, PowerPoint, Excel and Word mobile are missing. 6. Smartphones like Treo and Sidekick 3 are expensive. They also need to be upgraded often and they add to the cost. 7. With Smartphones like Blackberry, one will really get obsessed with it. 8.
